This Lent retreat led by Revd Richard Lyall invites you to enter the ancient imagery of the desert — an open and spacious place, where we step away from the busyness and distraction of daily life and into a quiet space where the heart begins to listen again.
In the beautiful surroundings of Waverley Abbey, we will draw water from the ancient wells of Scripture, the Desert Fathers, Christian mystics, C S Lewis’ Narnia Chronicles and other spiritual classics. We’ll journey through dry places, discover what truly sustains us and seek to encounter the God who meets His people in moments of longing and need.
Whether you’re carrying uncertainty, searching for clarity, or simply longing for a deeper connection with God, the desert can become a surprising place of renewal.

Meet the host
Revd Richard Lyall, leader of our sell out Advent Retreat, has been involved with Waverley Abbey for a number of years. Richard describes himself as having been plucked out of a promising career in IT 25 years ago, and sent on a wild journey including being ordained as an Anglican Priest and spending a year with a prayer community in Canada. He is currently based in Liverpool, and works as a freelance graphic designer and retreat leader. He loves to find ways to help people go deeper in their walk with God and encounter the Father’s love.
